L’histoire de Ruth

Ruth est une femme moabite et l’épouse de Malchon dont les parents, Elimelech et Naomi, se sont installés dans le pays de Moab pour fuir la famine en Judée. Le frère de Malchon, Chiljon, s’est également marié à une Moabite, Orpah. Lorsque Elimelech, Malchon et Chiljon décèdent, Naomi décide de rentrer dans son pays d’origine. Ruth suit sa belle-mère et elles s’installent pauvrement à Bethléem au moment des moissons. Elle ramasse des épis tombés pour sa belle-mère et fait la rencontre de Booz, riche propriétaire terrien et parent d’Elimelech. Suivant les conseils de Naomi, Ruth se rapproche de Booz qui est attiré par elle. Booz obtiendra l’héritage d’Elimelech. Après avoir obtenu de l’héritier direct qu’il n’exerce pas ses droits. Booz épouse alors Ruth qui lui donnera pour fils Obed, père de Jessé et grand-père du roi David.
